That is a beautiful poem.

Isn’t it amazing how our hearts can expand with love when children come our way. You think there is no room for more love, and then you discover heart expansion comes easy.

How profound is a heart beat! It makes such a difference. I had a miscarriage, but we never heard a heart beat. My daughter had 5 miscarriages, never heard a heartbeat, gave up, got pregnant again, and this time, there was a heart beat! It was such a special time! But it took her months before she believed our little Gio was real.

Grief. The uninvited guest. We harden against it…but perhaps it’s best to lean in…soften.

Thank you for sharing your experience. And may your child always live in a soft tender place in your heart.❤️

Thank you for sharing a piece of your story with me. I’m so sorry for yours and your daughter’s losses. So glad your family got little Gio finally. What a gift. I don’t know what my future holds but I do know my child will always live in my heart.

Sam, the movement from trying to evict grief to learning how to share the house with her gives this piece its emotional truth. The anniversary of your baby’s heartbeat becomes more than a date you survive; it becomes a room you can enter again, carrying sorrow and love together without either erasing the other. “Love lived here first” gives grief a different moral meaning, one rooted in attachment, memory, and the life that changed you. Thank you for trusting readers with a witness that honors your baby while giving other grieving people permission to keep the house open to remembrance.

I'm glad you decided to share. Integrity to yourself and your life experiences makes for richer, more beautiful writing. (And, of course, I'm sorry for your loss).

Thank you, Richard. I appreciate you ❤️

This is so beautiful Sam: "Because I learned that the grief was not my enemy—it was simply proof of love." and the poem, oh my god... Thank you for sharing this very private and emotionally rich moment in your life. If you lost subscribers talking about this before, they weren't the ones that mattered. This experience is part of what makes you YOU.

Thank you so much, Nancy. Your words mean a lot. And you’re absolutely right, the people who left just weren’t “my people”.

Grief comes unwanted and uninvited, but it prepares us for Divine Grace.

I don't know if you have heard of Tagore. He lived with grief practically all his life. There is one line written by him

What came as grief, has transformed itself as peace.

Gah. Your words are so powerful. What a life this is. I'm sorry for all the pain and grief you've had to "room with" over time. This is not an easy co-existence. And yet, your love remains. So, so good.

Sam DeCosmo's avatar

What a life, indeed. Thanks for the reminder that it’s not an easy co-existence. Sometimes I forget that because, well, it’s just my normal. Support from people like you helps though. And love will always remain.

So much love to you, dear friend. I’m glad you shared your beautiful poem. 🤍

Sam DeCosmo's avatar

Love received 🫶🏻 I’m glad I shared it too, although I debated not sharing it. But I wanted to honor my baby and maybe help some others who are grieving too. Miscarriage is often kept so hush hush. That makes it even harder. I want to help change that.

Lisa ⨾ mylongpause's avatar

Yeah, I also understand wanting to keep something close, or not wanting to trigger others. Even if some people might not be in a place to receive it, I think it’s like water in a desert for those who are.

Beautiful poem. Miscarriage is a heartbreak many don’t understand. I had 4 between my 2 children. It was devastating to say the least. Not many understood the toll it takes both mentally & physically. And that the loss is very real.

I’m keeping you in my thoughts & prayers as you honor your little one.

Your last line sums it up well: grief is proof of love lost.

Sam DeCosmo's avatar

Yes, many don’t understand. And I think part of the reason is that it’s typically just not talked about a lot. That’s why I’m talking about it. I want that to change.

I’m so sorry for your losses. I know you’ll never forget them 🫶🏻
